would-be astronaut
Design Process
The photo book title, “would-be astronaut“ invites the viewer to imagine what an individual could sense while viewing the Earth, its environments, its inhabitants, and the boundless possible intersections of those from a brand-new perspective.
Drawing validation from the notable Camus description of the ‘denseness’ and ‘strangeness’ one can sometimes feel in the natural world, this project approaches the act of seeing - and seeing photographs - as a familiar yet potentially uncanny experience.
The images span a variety of approaches and serve as small assertions that continued wonder about our own world is justified and perhaps even critical at this moment in history. We must acknowledge the degree to which, “…a stone is foreign and irreducible to us, with what intensity nature or a landscape can negate us.”

"A step lower and strangeness creeps in: perceiving that the world is "dense", sensing to what degree a stone is foreign and irreducible to us, with what intensity nature or a landscape can negate us. At the heart of all beauty lies something inhuman, and these hills, the softness of the sky, the outline of these trees at this very minute lose the illusory meaning with which we had clothed them, henceforth more remote than a lost paradise."
~Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus
